The Dark Labyrinth
This is basically my OSR style game. "DnD how I'd do it!" Whereas Adrenaline Ninja Street feels like it is leaning in maybe a more modern/heavier direction (and maybe I'll see if I can counter that), I'd like this to at least aim for a B/X simplicity, though I expect to fall short.
Bullet-pointed Brain Storming
Let's do it.
- Cities Without Number is a DnD based game with no classes. It does this through Edges and Foci. Star Wars Saga and d20 Modern let you freely multiclass to blend together what you want. TMNT & OS kinda do this through the use of BIO-E, which in a sense can be thought of as not dissimilar to the budget for a car, cyberdeck or cybernetics provided by Cities Without Numbers Foci.
- What do I dislike about DnD? I kinda dislike the particular classes, so I'd wanna either have classes that feel right in the ACKS or LOTFP area, or pop those abilities apart in a way inspired by the above CWN or d20 Modern/Star Wars Saga approaches. Fantasy Craft gets mentioned too, so look at it, but I think it's too DnD 3e to have what I'm really looking for.
- What do I dislike about DnD pt. 2? I dislike levels that go too high, or create too much disparity in survivability. This could be addressed in how advancement works (is it level based, what do levels provide?), or also a bit in how survivability works (as in, is it HP or something else? How many? How is it recovered? Is there any possibility of permanence?)
- The main thing "My Own DnD" wants to purge is the particular DnDisms. These are many, so many I can't even be bothered to list them right now. Silly particular class abilities, alignment, a lot of stuff around magic and monsters, setting assumptions, treasure, "demi-humans" and so on.
- What do I wish to keep of DnD? Some level of compatibility with other OSR materials, like maybe the Monster Overhaul, for example. Some procedures like the dungeon turn procedure, morale and things along those lines. Maybe altered or revamped.
- Some setting vibes that crossed my mind were Harryhousen fantasy or Castlevania style fantasy. I don't need the game to evoke these particuar things, but I like those things and the main goal is to avoid evoking my despised DnDisms as much as I can manage given the chassis.
